Tony Lee
Award-winning sculptor, Tony Lee, begins his idea for a sculpture with a rough sketch, utilizing shapes, and lines until a pleasing image appears. Nature and modern and southwestern architectural design plays a part in his creations along with simplistic shapes and forms that are unique to his style. Tony Lee’s main creations are based on abstract designs, but he also does commission work with Southwest figurative themes.

The materials favored by Tony Lee are stone (alabaster, limestone, and marble), metal (steel, corten, stainless steel, silicon bronze and aluminum). He has also utilized the lost wax casting process for bronze sculpture. Color is used to enhance the lines and designs of his metal sculpture using powder coating , automotive paint and natural stones.
Tony Lee grew up in New Mexico and Southwestern Colorado. His parents, both silversmiths, inspired Tony's interest in art. Tony's talent was first recognized when, in fourth grade, his pastel drawing was awarded second place at the Shiprock Northern Navajo Fair. He went on to study welding at Utah Technical College and began to focus his work in the field of fine art and the challenge of expressing his creativity through mixed media.
In May 1987, Tony received his certificate in three-dimensional art and the following year completed his Associate of Fine Arts Degree at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe. Tony was featured in the 1986-87 Tenth Annual Edition of the National Dean's List and the 1988 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. In August of 1988, he received a Certificate of Appreciation from New Mexico Governor Gary Carruthers.
Tony has participated in many selected exhibitions for his stone and metal sculptures, which have won him multiple awards and honors: “The Inspiration and Influence of Allan Houser Haozous”, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe, N.M. 50/50 Anniversary of the Institute of American Indian Arts, The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, N.M. Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Native Modernism Symposium, Washington D.C. Salt Lake City, Utah Olympics.
Tony Lee has done commission pieces for TSW Products, Japan; Humana, Strella, E-Funds Scottsdale, AZ; IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, and several private collectors.
Tony Lee was most privileged to work as Assistant Sculptor to the renowned 20th Century Master Sculptor Allan Houser Haozous from 1989 until his death in 1994. Working for Allan Houser, the inspiration Tony Lee received from his patience and humble dignity. Tony Lee has had the exclusive opportunity to be entrusted with Houser installation at many museums and institutions such as Gilcrease Museum; National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution; History Museum of Oklahoma; Oklahoma City State Capitol Building; Autry Museum, Los Angeles, CA; The Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona; University of Dartmouth, New Hampshire; Denver Botanical Gardens; Phoenix Botanical Garden; Salt Lake City Olympics. These travel endeavors has been inspirational giving Tony Lee the direction his own work taken as his own career has evolved.
